Abstract

The influence of two carbon sources on microalgae cultured in cassava peel extract for bioelectricity production was investigated in pond water fuel cell. The separator efficiency of salt bridge, woven polypropylene and CSI-7000 was also compared along with different electrode materials. Both calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate contributed to bioelectricity production with greater impact in pond water rather than pure culture of Parachlorella sp. MF114127.Sodium bicarbonate had a maximum voltage of 1.44 V from pure culture and 1.46 V from pond water while calcium carbonate had a more sustainable trend of production than sodium bicarbonate with 1.40 V from Parachlorella sp and 1.43 V from pond water. Current production of 1.22 mA , 1.12 mA and 1.06 mA were obtained for woven polypropylene, cation exchange membrane (CSI-7000) and salt bridge respectively. Zinc plate electrode at both anode and cathode had the highest voltage of 1.67 V.
